Digital Residencies
Our digital residencies — Narrative Shifts, The Workshop, and The Cohort — are generative incubators for artists and writers from around the world to create alongside each other.
Whereas our magazine and our community anthologies are for the writer who is ready to publish a piece, our digital residencies are for the writer who is looking to deepen their relationship to their work. Through each program, residents can expect resources, accountability, and plenty of inspiration. Our hope is that these process-based programs can help writers at any stage of their careers find an answer to the question: “What next?”

About
We built these programs for creative writers, students of story, and those who work in and/or with narratives.
Each residency brings together writers of all kinds to exchange ideas, questions, and narratives. Dependent upon where you are in your creative trajectory, we have a digital residency that will suit your needs. Our past residents have included individuals who are curious about applying to MFA programs, but who cannot or have not due to life circumstances; people who consider themselves to be newer to writing; folks who have been writing for years or decades, but who are now seeking a community to write alongside; and artists who don’t consider themselves writers by trade, but who are interested in learning more about the craft.
All three of our programs are intentionally genre-agnostic, offering you the opportunity to experiment with various genres and forms, and to learn from writers who practice in other genres. We encourage questions and conversation; building community with like-minded creatives is a central part of the digital residency experience. Many of our residents have gone on to continue exchanging resources and encouragement months and years after the program’s end. So if you’re looking for that creative spark in your writing life, consider applying for an upcoming digital residency.
Specific Residencies
Our digital residencies invite writers, artists, and activists from all genres and perspectives to bolster their art through community.
Narrative Shifts
Narrative Shifts is a genre-agnostic, seven-session writing program held in the spring and fall, centering specific aspects of craft that any writer, reader, or thinker could wield both on the page and off. It is ideal for newer writers or those in need of creative spark.

The Workshop
The Workshop is a five-session program that takes place each summer, meant for the writer who has work they’re ready to receive thoughtful verbal and written feedback on. This program flips the traditional workshop model on its head.

The Cohort
The Cohort is a 12-week accountability program built specifically for Seventh Wave alum that takes place at the start of each calendar year, between January and April. Interested residents will be matched with other alum based on genre, interests, projects, or curiosities.

FAQ
No question is too small; below are a few questions we often get asked about our digital residencies.
Who is eligible to apply for a digital residency?
Our digital residencies are meant for the writer or artist who is interested in process rather than publication.  It doesn’t matter where you are in your arc as a writer (or artist) today — whether you are newly dipping your toe into poetry or have several short story collections under your belt — so long as you are curious to expand upon your literary tool kit, and to be an active participant throughout the program. As this is a digital residency, we also highly encourage folks from outside the US to apply.
One thing to note is that The Cohort is currently only open to Seventh Wave alum, meaning that you had to have been previously published with us or gone through one of our other digital residency programs in order to partake. If you have any questions regarding eligibility for The Cohort, please reach out to us at residency@seventhwavemag.com.
What does it cost to attend the digital residency?
Narrative Shifts costs $895 per resident, which is roughly $125 per session, plus the final bonus session, which is technically an eighth session. For each cohort, there will be two fully-funded scholarship seats. We also offer some additional financial aid, but this depends upon the number of requests and the size of our scholarship fund at that time. Payment plans are available.
The Workshop costs $450, or about $90 per session, plus an optional one-on-one with your facilitator. There is limited financial aid available for this program, but payment plans are always offered for any participating resident to help offset costs.
The Cohort costs $295, or about $25 per session. There is no financial aid available for this program, but limited payment plans are available to help offset costs.
How large are the cohorts?
For Narrative Shifts, each cohort consists of 12-16 residents, with two Seventh Wave facilitators always in the room. We currently run three concurrent cohorts for each intake. There is one intake in the spring and one in the fall.
For The Workshop, there are 7 residents per cohort, each led by a single Seventh Wave facilitator, with several concurrent cohorts for each intake. The number of cohorts will vary each year. This program runs in the summer.
For The Cohort, there are 6-8 residents per cohort, each led by a single Seventh Wave guide who will help kick off and close out each session. There are three date/time options for each intake, with the possibility of multiple cohorts running during a given time slot. This program takes place at the start of each calendar year in the winter, from January through April.
What else is included as part of the digital residency experience?
In addition to the weekly sessions, each digital residency also includes a number of great resources to help bolster your experience. For both Narrative Shifts and The Workshop, there are optional one-on-one sessions with your facilitator, during which time you could chat about a specific piece or project, or just your creative process  at large. Narrative Shifts features a bonus session, where we bring in an established author of the cohort’s choosing for a casual conversation and craft talk, as well as an optional feature on our Spotlights column.
Each residency comes with resource packets and/or guides for you to return to after the program’s end, and anyone who goes through one of our digital residency programs is also then eligible to apply for an in-person residency in the future.
Spotlights
We shine lights on our contributors’ and residents’ writing practices.
When it comes to creativity, we know that so much of the labor, inspiration, and process behind a piece can be invisibilized. Our Spotlights help remedy that by making the act of writing more approachable. Each Spotlight offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one maker’s process.

We’re creating welcoming and nurturing spaces for our community to flourish.

Our in-person residencies are structured to nourish your entire creative being.

“There is a different feeling to being published as part of a cohort, all writing toward the same theme.
Whatever that feeling is — community, care, solidarity, grace — Seventh Wave, in its gestures, is holding this space, a space where our words can not only sit side by side but as part of a shared vision.”
— David Naimon, 2023 “On Rivers” Community Anthology contributor
