The Cohort
Welcome to The Cohort, where Seventh Wave alum can find accountability, community, and a creative reset for the new year.

Seventh Wave alum, welcome home. For years, we’ve tried to find more ways to welcome alum back into the fold. It’s been so heartening to see writers we published many years ago returning through our Community Anthologies program, or applying to our Narrative Shifts digital residency, or even joining our team to pay their editorial experience forward to the next intake of contributors. This digital residency, The Cohort, is our way of continuing to build community for and with the very folks who’ve helped make us who we are in the first place.
The Cohort is a 12-week program built around accountability, taking place at the start of each calendar year, between January and April. Interested applicants will be thoughtfully matched with other Seventh Wave alum in cohorts of 6-8 writers and artists in a partially self-guided environment that encourages meaningful connection and exchange. Each session is 90-minutes long. See more information below.
Is The Cohort for you?
We built this program for our Seventh Wave alum — individuals whom we’ve published in either The Magazine or one of our Community Anthologies; past anthology editors-in-chief; those who’ve gone through one of our in-person or digital residencies; and team members who’ve devoted their time and energy to helping the Seventh Wave run smoothly:
- Maybe you published your work with us years ago, and would love to be back in touch. This program is one of our only alum-specific spaces, and it offers the chance for talented writers, artists, and activists to reengage with our growing community. The Cohort is a good opportunity to find fellow comrades who are working on incredibly urgent art, and who also require community as a part of their process.
- Maybe you had a great experience through one of our digital residencies, and want to meet other Seventh Wave alum. Over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from folks who’ve had life-changing experiences through one of our programs, and who want to meet other creatives who are similarly serious about their craft. The Cohort will connect individuals from different parts of the Seventh Wave community to each other, with the hopes of helping expand your literary networks.
- Maybe you feel distant from your creative practice, and need a reset. Life gets busy, and the world can be a lot. Maybe you’re looking for a soft place to land after some time away from your own writing, but can’t afford the monetary cost or time commitment that other programs require. The Cohort is completely virtual, and structured with lots of opt-in opportunities, so you can really make this experience your own based on what you need.
- Maybe you have a specific project in mind, and you could really use some accountability to get it to the next level. The foundation of The Cohort is accountability: gathering dedicated, enthusiastic Seventh Wave alum together to keep each other buoyed through the winter season. The 12-week container is a perfect amount of time to dig into that project and meet any related deadlines.
- Maybe you want to establish a sustainable writing practice for yourself, and you don’t know where to start. You know you need the accountability of a cohort to fully commit to your writing routines, practices, or rituals. This program is a great place to incubate a new idea, dig deeper into a piece, or take inventory of a current project, while also offering the relational support you might need to keep showing up to the page.
To note: there is no formal application process to partake in The Cohort; if you’re interested in being a part of the program, you’re very much welcomed in. We do, however, have an interest form that we ask all prospective residents to fill out so that we can form cohorts of 6-8 residents based upon similar genres, projects, or curiosities, which can help folks connect quickly — and deeply — with others throughout the program.

CloseApplication Process
Applications are open now through Nov. 30 via an interest form on Submittable.
There is no formal application process for The Cohort, as we want to welcome back any and all Seventh Wave alum who might be interested in the program. There is, however, an interest form that will help us better understand each prospective resident’s scheduling availability, interests, and hopes for the 12-week program. This will ensure that we can match residents with writers and artists who have similar goals, questions, and backgrounds. All of our offerings — be it our annual literary magazine or Community Anthologies program — are designed to create safe spaces for those who participate, especially folks from marginalized communities. Given that this program is a cohort-based experience that brings together 6-8 writers and artists from all over the world, our interest form also ensures that residents are aligned with our ethos of collaboration.
What information is required to participate in The Cohort?
- General information: This includes things like your name, email, time zone, the cohort/track(s) you are available to join, and a confirmation that you agree to the community principles of this program.
- A statement of interest: There will be a few questions that help us get a better understanding of who you are as a writer: what your primary genre(s) is/are; where you’re at in your creative trajectory; what backgrounds and identities you’re bringing to the page; and what kind of accountability you’re most interested in. Though we’ve worked with you before in the past, things may have changed since we were last in touch, so this portion of the interest form helps us get reacquainted with you and your work.
- Sample work/portfolio: You will be required to submit some kind of sample work. This does not have to be a published piece. In fact, we encourage you to submit whatever you are working on these days, however unformed or rough. Because this program is not a workshop and does not include publication, we highly encourage you to submit something that you feel best illustrates your writing practice. We primarily want to get a sense for who is in the room so we can properly match you with other residents. Please submit no more than 10 pages of sample work.

Program Overview
The Cohort, which is only open to Seventh Wave alum, is a partially self-guided accountability program that focuses on developing creative discipline and expanding literary friendships. The program includes:
- Three “core” sessions: Each month, there will be one week of “core” sessions, which will be facilitated by a Cohort Guide, revolving around a different aspect of the creative practice (ie. how to find accountability in our writing lives, when to share pages with others, or what to look for when submitting to publications or residencies). This will be held with the Seventh Wave-curated cohorts.
- “Satellite” sessions: Outside of the monthly “core” sessions, the other sessions each month will be primarily focused on generative accountability — a chance for residents to co-write and hold space for their own work. To offer flexibility and the option to expand their practice, all residents are welcome to join any of these “satellite” sessions for those three weeks.
- The Accountability Guide: All participating residents will also receive the “Accountability Guide,” a document that showcases wisdom and know-how from our Seventh Wave community members. This digital resource will be something residents can hopefully refer back to for inspiration from time to time, a blueprint of different ways to shape a creative practice.
- Directory of residents: Folks participating in the residency will also have the opportunity to opt into a directory of The Cohort residents that helps deepen and further connections beyond the 12-week program. This will include things like whether folks are looking for buddies to exchange pages with, or if they’re situated in a certain city/area, tidbits of information that can help residents build more literary friendships.
Cost of Program
- Cost. This program costs $395, which is roughly $33 per session. Residents are allowed to join as many additional “satellite” sessions as they’d like during the 12-week period.
- Financial aid. Due to the nature of this program and the lower price point, there will not be any financial aid available at this time. We do, however, offer payment plans as a way to offset costs.
- Confirming your spot with your deposit. Upon being confirmed to partake in the program, you will have one week to secure your spot by signing the contract and making your deposit (20% of the total fee, or $80), which will then go toward the total cost of the program. If you do not reserve your seat within one week, you will be forfeiting your spot.
A note on price: We conducted extensive research on pricing for a program like ours. We worked closely with our team and advisory board, surveying the industry to ensure that our program and pricing is equitable and accessible. We are also committed to appropriately paying our staff for the time and talent it takes to run this program, and so while we will always do what we can to make our programs available and accessible to the public, we are also committed to ensuring that our nonprofit appropriately values the work that goes into making this program possible to begin with.
CloseFAQ
No question is too small; below are a few frequently asked questions.
Will there be a workshop component to this program?
No. There is no formal or traditional workshop session for this program. We assume and expect residents will be working on pieces or manuscripts during their time with us, but there is no designated “workshop.” The focus of this program is generative. For those who are interested in a more formal workshop setting, please consider applying to our Summer digital residency, The Workshop.
CloseAre sessions recorded?
No. In order to preserve the intimacy of our sessions and the privacy of information shared, we do not record any of our sessions, and we also ask that residents do not record anything either.
CloseWhat happens if I can't attend a session?
Because of the way the program is structured, each resident will be meeting with their designated cohort at least once a month for their “core” session. If you are unable to make it to a “core” session, you unfortunately cannot transfer to another cohort’s “core” session, since we built this program to honor the intimate space of each individual cohort.
If, however, a resident cannot make it to one of their cohort’s “satellite” sessions, they are free to join a different cohort’s “satellite” session for that week, and/or attend a different cohort’s “satellite” session in addition to their own.
CloseIs there a limit to the number of "satellite" sessions I can join?
No. There is no limit to the number of “satellite” sessions you can join during the 12-week program. So, in theory, you could be joining three “satellite” sessions a week, and then your “core” session each month, for a total of 10 sessions each month, or 30 altogether. If, however, you just stick with your weekly cohort sessions, you would be taking part in 4 sessions a month, or 12 total. Our hope is that the program is structured to offer flexibility for folks who want to opt in for more sessions.
CloseWhat happens if I am accepted but then can no longer commit to the 12-week program?
We kindly ask that you let us know as soon as possible if this is the case so that we can make any necessary adjustments to the cohorts. A 20% non-refundable deposit is due one week after you receive your acceptance, but any other tuition you have paid beyond that will be refunded to you so long as you let us know about your withdrawal prior to the start of the program in late January. If you need to withdraw after that, we unfortunately cannot offer a refund.
CloseHow many digital residents do you accept per intake and/or cohort?
Within each intake, we offer three cohort time slots, and each cohort will have 6-8 residents. We do not currently have a cap on how many cohorts we will run during any given time slot.
CloseAre there any differences between the cohorts?
No. This is simply for scheduling considerations. We offer three cohorts in order to offer three options for meeting days and times, as all of our digital residencies are meant to bring writers from all over the world — and therefore time zones — together.
