Have you ever wanted to be an editor-in-chief of your own folio?
We are now accepting applications to be an EIC through our 2025 Community Anthologies program. Each year, we select four EICs to curate their own digital anthology of 6-8 pieces on our site. This is a cohort-based program, wherein Seventh Wave guides the EICs over a seven-month period, supporting them as they move through each step of the curation, editorial, and publication processes. Each EIC receives a $1,000 curation fee. We also accept applications from pairs of EICs, though the co-editors would split the stipend.
You can read more about the program and position below, but please note that we will also be hosting a Zoom info session on Wednesday, March 19 at noon PST for folks who are interested. Our Director of Programs Bretty Rawson will walk you through the program details, EIC roles and responsibilities, and the application and selection processes. There will also be time for questions and answers at the end. For those who are curious to learn more, but who cannot attend, we will be recording that session, so please reach out to Bretty at bretty@seventhwavemag.com if you’d like to get a recording. You can see a few more key details below:
- Apply: to apply, please visit our Submittable page here. Applications are open now through 4/9. There is a $5 application fee, which helps us compensate our committee for their time and labor. You can waive this fee by sending your full application to submit@seventhwavemag.com if it poses a barrier to entry.
- Eligibility: the only requirement to apply for the EIC position is that you must have some form of publishing/editorial/curatorial experience. Meaning, you must have been published before AND you must have edited/published someone else’s work before (whether that be in a magazine, an online publication, an anthology, or otherwise). This requirement is put in place as the program is not meant to teach someone how to edit/curate from the ground up, though there are ample opportunities for resource sharing amongst the cohort, as well as guidance from the Seventh Wave throughout the duration of the program.
- Topics: We recommend taking a look at our 2024 Community Anthologies and our 2023 Community Anthologies to learn about the kinds of topics that have been selected, as well as the anthologies that each EIC curated.
- Timeline & Duties: EICs are selected and notified in April. The work begins in May and ends in November. Seventh Wave will guide EICs through each step of the process: call curation, submissions, selection, editing, and publishing. EICs are required to attend a monthly meeting from May to November. Main duties include curating your 1-paragraph prompt, selecting your 6-8 writers/artists, editing your contributors’ work, and providing key anthology items, like an Editor’s Note. We will go over each phase during our info session.
- Stipend: Each EIC will receive a $1,000 stipend, and each contributor they publish will receive a $100 stipend. There is also an additional $250 stipend that an EIC could use to work with a featured artist to produce featured images for each piece. As such, the total budget for each anthology is around $1,850-2,050 ($1000 + $600-800 + $250).
- Our recommendations: to submit a strong application, we recommend a) going through our 2024 Community Anthologies, if you haven’t already; b) reading the Anthologies section of the FAQ on our Submit page; c) attend our info session on March 19 at noon PST; and d) spend time thinking about the issue that you want to curate (this is the primary way for you to stand out as an applicant). Note: if/when you are selected, you will be able to change your topic, but we require that you let us know what you are currently interested in curating as a way to ensure we have a variety of curators and topics. Looking at our 2024 anthology calls should help you think about the type of issue you might want to curate.
