By The Seventh Wave

Apply by Aug. 23 to join this seven-week, seven-session writing program.

If you are a writer or artist looking to deepen your relationship to your work, consider applying for our Digital Residency program, Narrative Shifts: a genre-agnostic writing program that includes seven sessions over seven weeks, centering specific aspects of craft that any writer, reader, or thinker could wield both on and off the page. What’s the program all about, how do you apply, and what have our past residents said about their experiences with us? Learn more below, and reach out to residency@seventhwavemag.com with any questions.

  • Overview. Whereas our magazine and our community anthologies are for the writer who is ready to publish a piece, our digital residency, Narrative Shifts, is for the writer or artist who is looking to deepen their relationship to their work. This process-based program is a seven-week, seven-session experience, helping writers at any stage of their careers find an answer to the question: “What next?”
  • Applications: There is an application process for our Digital Residency to ensure that participation in our program is not just contingent upon one’s financial resources. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. PST on 8/23 via our Submittable page here.
  • 2024 Fall Cohorts: We are offering two cohorts for our 2024 Fall Program: one that meets weekly on Mondays from 5-7 p.m. PST between Sept 30. and Nov. 11 and one that meets weekly on Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. PST between Sept. 28 – Nov. 9. There is no difference between the two cohorts: it is purely a scheduling consideration (as we have folks who partake in this program from different timezones around the world).
  • Genre-Agnostic: One thing to call out is that our digital writing program is genre-agnostic. Our seven sessions are formed around topics that are critical to any type of writer, artist, or form, be it traditional prose and poetry or experimental and hybrid forms. You can see the full description of our session topics here, but the titles are: Centering Questions, The Role of Our Archives, On Permission, To Build a World, Form Matters, Holding Spaces, and Narratives Shift.
  • Program Elements: This process-based program is resource-driven. Prior to each session, we send out a Resource Packet that includes grounding words, generative prompts, and continued resources. In total, our resource packets have 21 generative prompts and 75+ resources. We designed this program to introduce you to different types of writers and writing, artists and artmaking, which is why we have guest writers join some of our sessions, why we host a bonus session (which invites in a writer of the cohort’s choosing), and why our seventh and final session is a celebratory reading.
  • Global Community: We’ve been hosting some kind of virtual residency since 2020 (the current version, Narrative Shifts, launched earlier this year), and so far, we’ve welcomed residents from Japan, Canada, Vietnam, UK, India, Armenia, Ukraine, and Lebanon.
  • Zoom Info Session: If you’re curious to learn more or ask questions, join our Zoom Info Session on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 4-5 p.m. PST. We’ll be talking about the application and selection processes, as well as going over the program details. Register here. This will be recorded. You may request a recording by signing up for the session or emailing residency@seventhwavemag.com.
  • More info: You can find all the information, dates, and details about the program on our site here.

Applications are open through Aug. 23. You can find more information about submitting on our digital residency page here. To submit, please visit our Submittable page
